Quill maker and Philanthropist
Joseph Levi was born Coventry in 1793. He was a Quill pen manufacturer and dealer. He cared very much for the poor and needy in Coventry. He founded the Coventry Philanthropic Societies in many neighbourhoods around the City. He encouraged others to contribute also to the genuine needs of the poor. Many lives were touched and changed through his work.
His philanthropic work began while meeting with other business men at the White Lion Hotel in Smithford Way. You can still see the mosaic floor from the White Lion Hotel close to the centre of Coventry's shopping precinct.
He moved with his family to Liverpool where he lived until 1874.
